Stone gouge Men were the primary woodworkers among Algonquian cultural groups in what is now New England. This gouge's size indicates its use in large woodworking projects such as creating dugout canoes. These canoes were often made of hollowed pine logs. The center was burned, and the charcoal was chiseled out with gouges like this one. This example has a modern, wooden haft attached to it. Smaller gouges would have been used for projects like making food bowls.
