Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville's Portrait This portrait of Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville (1668-1722) is one of the earliest civil portraits to have been painted in New France (now Canada). Hertel de Rouville led the raid on Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1704. His portrait was probably painted prior to 1713 when de Rouville was posted to Ile Royale (now Prince Edward Island). When he was made a knight of the Order of Saint Louis in 1721, the insignia of the Order was added to the portrait. The artist of the portrait is unknown.
