Crucifix Religion played a significant role in the contact between the French and the Native Americans during the 17th century. Missionaries made evangelization an important component of French activity in the New World. They used various methods to interest Indians in their religion and used symbols such as the cross to help explain their doctrine. This early 18th-century crucifix with pedestal is from the St. Francis Xavier Catholic church in the village of Kahnawake, Province of Québec, near Montréal.
